In the latest Alex Cross film, Tyler Perry temporarily strips away his fat suit to play the detective/psychologist–first portrayed by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider–as he hunts for his wife’s murderer. Lost‘s Matthew Fox plays said murderer/MMA fighter (spoiler?), and as you can see above, he’s daringly decided to play the role as pure muscle, without the dramatic crutches of hair or skin.

xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor director Rob Cohen helmed the film, so you should probably not expect anything more profound than the Alex Cross commercials from author James Patterson, but if you’re interested in seeing Fox look insane and insanely ripped, or seeing Tyler Perry wear a trenchcoat, here are some photos from the production.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

I just saw Benh Zeitlin & Court 13′s Beasts of the Southern Wild, the top Grand Jury Prize winner in Sundance and my favorite film of that festival, for a second time today at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s just as phenomenal a second time. One of my favorite films of the year, it’s that good, that moving, that amazing, even seeing it again. Fox Searchlight, who picked up the film and is releasing it this summer, has launched a new interactive website at WelcomeToTheBathtub.com plus a viral Tumblr blog focusing on the small, wet Southern Louisiana region it takes place in nicknamed “The Bathtub“. This is cool, visit when you can. ›››

Wise to leave all the film’s spurting whipped cream out of this shot. This way it will take the guy defacing the bus shelter at least another twenty seconds to draw in the semen.

Cloud Atlas

They’re finally letting the cat out of the bag. Warner Bros has started screening early cuts of Cloud Atlas, the nearly finished Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel, featuring six storylines and actors playing multiple roles/genders/races. This is a project we’ve followed closely for a long time, not only because it’s the latest Wachowskis movie, but because it has the potential to be amazing, with settings that span thousands of years. The studio recently screened the film in Cannes for buyers, and also held test screenings in London and Los Angeles, which I’ve heard some positive feedback from already. More below! ›››

Noting, “the world is too violent now,” and fearing he is only encouraging this violence every time he fights a man with a refrigerator, Jackie Chan has announced his retirement from action movies. Just as soon as he does Rush Hour 4. And Karate Kid 2. But that’s really more of an acting showcase.

Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry

With the long-running medical drama series “House M.D.” coming to an end next week, I’m hoping that means Hugh Laurie will have more time for feature films. He’s lent his voice to films like Hop, Monsters vs. Aliens and Arthur Christmas recently (since voice roles are considerably less time consuming when hiatus between seasons of a TV show), and he’s adding another one to the mix. However, this time THR reports Laurie will reunite with his old comedy cohort Stephen Fry for the first time in 13 years to lend their voices to an animated film called The Canterville Ghost, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s short story. ›››

Magic Mike

While plenty of people have obviously been excited about The Avengers assembling on the big screen, there’s an all-male assembly that will have more of the women excited in a whole different way. The first trailer for Magic Mike, the story about the life of a male stripper inspired by the real-life job Channing Tatum once had before making it big in Hollywood, was definitely a tease, and this one is no different. However, this time we see Tatum’s titular character taking Alex Pettyfer under his wing. Honestly, shirtless dudes aren’t my cup of tea, but I’d be lying if I said the film didn’t look interesting. With a Short Circuit remake and a farting dog movie on his plate, one would think Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties director Tim Hill would have more than enough servings live-action and CGI to fill him for a while. But Tim Hill’s desire for broad, family entertainment cannot be sated so easily: the Hop director has now made a deal with Fox to co-write and direct a movie called Playdate. The premise of the family film is still being kept secret, but according to Deadline, “the title is somewhat self explanatory.” So start thinking of ways a playdate could somehow result in an exasperated man tending to a wise-cracking CGI mammal, and that’s probably the movie.

Peter and the Starcatchers

There’s no doubt about it: J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan is so hot right now. Neverland’s favorite son is already the subject of two different movies in development, and now Deadline reports that another story about the ultimate Lost Boy is in the works at Disney, the studio that brought us Peter’s animated adventures way back in 1953. Jesse Wigutow will adapt Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s book Peter and the Starcatchers, which is another Peter Pan origin story that sets Peter and the infamous Lost Boys on an adventure to make sure that magical “starstuff” stays out of the hands of the evil pirate Black Stache. ›››

Alcon Entertainment’s belated Blade Runner franchise initiative is still easy enough to question–as easy as snidely reminding everyone that Alcon had a hand in Dude, Where’s My Car?, Racing Stripes, the Wicker Man remake, P.S. I Love You, One Missed Call, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, and Eddie Murphy’s live-action/CGI Hong Kong Phooey!–but it’s getting harder and harder to completely disregard the project. First the company brought on original director Ridley Scott–whose work on Alien sort-of-prequel Prometheus has shown a clear aptitude for returning to both his sci-fi past and unnerving close-ups of eyeballs–and now original Blade Runner co-writer and Scott’s fellow septuagenarian Hampton Fancher is in talks to write the screenplay.
